about

In the wake of the murder of Charleena Lyles in 2017, at the hands of the SPD, we were moved to write this song. It is also dedicated to the memory of John T. Williams, of the Nuu-chah-nulth tribe, who's life was senselessly taken by the police in 2010, with the false justification that he was brandishing a knife.

We had aimed to physically release this single as a cassette tape this spring, but our plans were dashed due to the pandemic. With the continued oppression of black and brown people, we could NOT STAY SILENT any longer! 100% of the profits for "Will We Ever?" will benefit the Northwest Community Bail Fund.

lyrics

Wulge is wide
and the hills are all asleep.
With our eyes closed tight
the souls still walk
out in the city streets.
And on the morning that she died,
still like the dust will they rise.
From the ashes of lodge fires
strange fruit is fertilized.
Will we ever?
Oh say can you see...
See the struggle of your neighbor
and not just shrug your shoulders in defeat?
And will we ever,
Make reparations for damages?
Or will we keep on handing down
the burden of heritage?

And all the children sing:
How?
Will we ever see...
You for you & me for me?
How?

Will we ever...
Stop burning books because
of their color?
If I see you as the knife
and I'm the gun
how will we ever know each other?
And I can hear...
Red blue and white.
I can taste all the colors
of the freshly turned off
police lights.
All the unborn babies singing:

How?
Will we ever see...
You for you and me for me?
How?

How?
Did they really see a knife in her hand,
Or just a stranger in a strange land?
How?

Warriors turned to vagabonds
on their own occupied land.
The police can cut you down
if they see a knife in your hand.

Or if they think they see a knife
In your hand! Just a stranger in a strange land.

Did they see? Did they see it?
NO!

HANDS UP DON'T SHOOT!
SAY HER NAME!

How?
